IRE Runtime Environment

The main goal of the Runtime Environment Prototype, is to achieve a scalable and extensible integration of the three platforms (AsTeRICS ARE, URC, MyUI) in order to produce a multiplatform environment which will "harvest“ the benefits of each platform. To fully understand the added value of the resulting solution, a basic knowledge of each platform is required. A brief description of AsTeRICS, URC and MyUI can be found below:

Install a SocketBuilder and Create a New Socket

This tutorial explains the creation of a socket for a very simple Todo-Service that we want to control. We will create the Socket with the SocketBuilder step by step and deploy it on a local UCH instance for testing purposes. By creating the Socket the three types of Socket Elements - variables, command and notifications - will be explained.

Access4all Metadata

AccessForAll metadata provides an interoperable framework for providing information about  the accommodations a resource provides. This is particularly useful for matching resources to a user's needs and preferences. The AccessForAll Metadata guide in the Inclusive Learning Design Handbook provides a case study for how an authoring tool may generate metadata automatically.

Inclusive EPUB3

The Inclusive EPUB 3 guide is intended for content creators and educators who wish to use EPUB 3 and are interested in making their published content broadly usable by a full spectrum of users.

This guide covers a broad range of topics that will help make an EPUB 3 book more usable in different contexts. The information provided illustrates how concepts may be applied but won't make you an "expert" - you are encouraged to use this guide as a starting point and to follow the resources provided to gain additional insight.

Audio Content and Learning

Audiobooks, podcasts, and lecture recordings are a popular way of delivering learning content. However, it is somewhat rare to find captions or transcripts for such content. The Audio Content and Learning guide on the Inclusive Learning Design Handbook covers topics such as enhancing audio with multiple modalities, and provides a possible design for an inclusive audio player.

Components of the UCH

Universal Control Hub 1.0 (ATR)

This Technical Report specifies the "Universal Control Hub" (short UCH) architecture. The UCH architecture is a profiling of the Universal Remote Console (URC) in the context of a Remote User Interface scenario. The UCH allows the application of the URC technology in an environment with non-URC compliant controllers and non-URC compliant targets. In this approach, the URC technology is implemented "in a box", with the Universal Control Hub acting as gateway between various controllers and various targets.

Design Guidelines for User Interface Sockets

URC sockets are the base on whicpersonalised user interfaces can be build. Since they are the common base of all possible user interfaces they should be well designed an stable in time. These guidelines help to develop reliable sockets.

Video Content and Learning

Video as a learning medium has become increasingly popular on the web. Many sites now even cater solely to video learning content (e.g., Academic Earth, TED Talks, Khan Academy). With the use of video as a compact and compelling medium, however, comes the responsibility of making it an effective platform for users with a myriad of different needs and preferences.

Learner Needs and Preferences

Each individual learns in a unique way. The Learner Needs and Preferences guide in the Inclusive Learning Design Handbook covers content malleability and provides resources to applying personalization principles to your own content.

Accessible Web Games and Interactive Simulations

The Accessible Web Games and Interactive Simulations guide within the Inclusive Learning Design Handbook (ILDH) provides insights and techniques for creating accessible interactive content. Topics include orienting a screen reader user, communicating events, and cognitive load.

2. Installing the UCH

UCHj is an open-source Java reference implementation of the Universal Control Hub (UCH) 1.0 specification. It is partially conforming to ISO/IEC 24752:2013. This software is intended for developers and researchers of remote user interfaces, and manufacturers of applicances, controllers and home control gateways. This second video of the 'Install Socket Builder and create a new socket' tutorial describes how to install the UCH in order to be able to test sockets or if you want to connect it to a real target.
